Final Composition

Process Journal Questions

Thumbnail Process

1) Describe the method you used to begin your creative process.

For this project i thought of what "Fresh Thoughts" meant to mean and how i could apply that to literature and essays and come up with an image and cover design.

2) Share your thoughts about your choice of typeface (i.e., Helvectica, Times)?

I wanted to use something with Serifs, because it reminds me of fonts that are commonly used for literature, and Fresh thoughts is a group of literature works.

3) Did you have a pre-conceived idea of a design when you began each of the thumbnails or did you experiment and discover visual concepts?

For a few of them i had pre-set ideas, like the ones with the ink and the pen, but for the rest i just kind of thought of something as i was doing it and left empty space for what could be filled with a photography or illustration later.

4) Explain how you involved experimentation with they any of the effects of gravity, weight, tension, perspective, movement, positive, and negative space.

I experimented with positive and negative space the most, i wanted to use some white on black without using too much black because this cover is something that is meant to be printed. I also experimented with weight a little bit, in some of my thumbnails the fonts are thicker than others.

5) What do you believe to be the strenghts and weaknesses of each of your thumbnail sketches?

I really like the white letters on black, with the thumbnails and the finished composition, so i think that was a strenght. I also like how some of my illustrations came out. A weakness was not really using any perspective, or alot of movement. The images were basically flat drawings.

Final Composition Process

1) What are your thoughts about choosing the thumbnail that you did? Why is it your best choice?

I choose the thumbnail because i wanted to use a photograph. I always use illustrations and the final comp i used allowed me to draw in my own lines and create what i wanted for the fonts, and then place a photograph into the design as well. I like how it came out, it was simple and it definatley is something that reminds me of literature which is what Fresh Thoughts represents.

Lessons Learned

1) What have you learned in the creation of this design? was there anything that you learned about the way that you began this project or the methods you used while developing the design?

I learned that i like to use my own photography in my designs. I usually draw most of my images or create them in Illustrator. This allowed me to try something new. I began this project with something in my mind, which included drawing it myself, and i ended up with something different by using a photograph. I like how it came out.

2) List the technical thing you learned while in this process.

i learned a few things on photoshop, and played around with the picture to get the right brightness and contrast. Other than that i didnt really learn anything technical, i knew what i was doing and it didnt require anything new.
