Questions and Process about Project II
Describe your porcess of creating your thubmnail sketches.
1) Describe the method you used to begin your creative process.
I first thought of how i could use an actual jump rope to use to create the words "jump rope". We werent aloud to use extra illustrations so i wanted to incorporate a jump rope into the words without the rope being "extra" material.
2) Explain your choice of using the computer or hand-drawing your thumbnails.
I hand drew my thumbnails. Using something like a rope to spell out cursive has alot of loops and curves and swirls, so for me it was easier to draw those out on paper.
3) Share your thoughts about your choice of typeface.
I didnt pick a typeface i was drawing my letters out by hand. I wanted to draw something that was swirley and fun so i thought handrawn lettering would be more expressive.
4) Did you have a pre-conceived idea of a design when you began each of the thumbnails or did you experiment and discover visual concepts?
I had an idea of what i wanted when i began my thumbnails. I knew i wanted to use a jump rope when i started drawing them. for my first thumbnail i used a rope to create the whole word and as i sketched i used some experimenting by placing the word 'jump' over 'rope' and other ideas came to mind.
5) Explain how you involved experimentation with the any of the effects of grabity, weight, tension, perspective, movement, positive and negative space.
I didnt experiment with much of the characteristics listed above. Movement is what i probablly experimented with the most, i wanted the words 'jump' to look as if they were moving.
6) What do you believe to be the strenghts and weaknesses of each of your thumbnail sketches?
For my thumbnails i achieved what i imagined them to look like. They have movement in them and the rope is used to spell out part of the word. A weakness is that using the rope and having it spell out 'rope' in cursive makes it kind of hard to read, so i had to work on that.
Desicribe your process of creating your comp for project II.
1) What are your thoughts about choosing the thumbnail that you did? Why is it your best choice?
I like my final comp because it combined two of my favorite thumbnails. I spelled out 'rope' using the actual jump rope and the letters that spell out 'jump' are jumpy and child like, which is what i think of when i think of a jump rope. It was the best choice because it expresses 'jump rope' with only using letters and is still easy to read.
2) What was your approach to adding color? How would you describe your color palette? How many color schemes did you consider?
I wanted to add color that was child-like. Jump ropes remind me of kids, and recess in elementary school, soo i didnt really think of many other color schemes because i had a set idea of what i wanted and what i thought would look best.
3) How did the introduction of color into your composition influence the effects of gravity, weight, tension, perspective, movement, positive and negative space?
The color didnt really affect it at all.
Lessons Learned
1) What have you learned in the creation of this design? Was there anything that you learned about the way that you began this project or the methods you used while developing the design?
I learned that expressing something without using illustration can be difficult. It would have been easier if we were aloud to use illustration in expressing something opposed to just using letters.
2) List the technical things you learned while in this process.
I didnt learn any new technical things, i did most of my work by hand.
