Thumbnail Sketches

Final Composition in Color

Questions and Process about project I

Describe your process creating the thumbnail sketches.

1. Desicribe the method you used to begin your creative process.

For my thumbnail sketches i just played around with the letter i choose. I didnt have anything in mind i just wanted to see what patterns or designs would come from playing around with the letter G.

2. Explain your choice of using the computer of hand-drawing your thumbnails.

I used the computer because it is easier to rotate or flip the letters around to create a pattern. It is also simple to delete and change sizes, so thats why i made my thumbnails on the computer.

3. share you thoughts about your choices of letterform and typeface.

I choose G because it has a circular shape so i thought some cool patterns would come from it, and for my final composition my typeface was century gothic because it is simple with no serifs and it gave it a more modern feel.

4. Did you have a pre-conceived idea of a design when you began each of the thumbnails or did you experiment and discover shape relationshops?

I experimented, i did not have an idea in mind when i began my thumbnail sketches.

5. Explain how you involved experimentation with any of the effects of gravity, weight, tenstion, perspective, movement. and positive and negative space.

I tried out some thick and thin fonts for different weights, and played around with positive and negative space by using black on white and vice versa. Thats all i really experimented with.

6. What do you believe to be the strengths and weaknesses of each of your thumbnail sketches?

The strenghts are that they are all different and vary from each other. Each thumbnail created a different pattern when i was experimenting with the letter. The weakness is that i didnt really play around with gravity and tension or perspective, ect.

Describe your process of creating your comp for project 1.

1.What are your thoughts about choosing the thumbnail that you did? Why was this your best choice?

I didnt like any of my original thumbnail so i created a new image for the final comp. It was better than the original comps and i choose it for my final comp because it had more patterns in it with different sizes and it have more movement.

2. What was your approach to adding color? How would you descrbibe your color palette? How many color schemes did you consider?

For color i wanted something that was light for a background and have the letters be dark. Because the background is light and my letters are still bold, my color palette, i think, has good contrast but is still colorful and bright. There weren't many other color schemes i considered.

3. How did the introduction of color into your composition influence the effects of gravity, wieght, tension, perspective, movement, and positive and negative space?

I dont think color really influenced my composition.

Lessons learned

1. What have you learned in the creation of this design? was there anything that you learned about the way that you began this project or the methods you used while deceloping the design?

I learned that creating your thumbnails on the computer can be easier than drawing them out, and Its not such a bad thing to go into a project without an idea. I created patterns that i liked without having an idea of what i wanted them to look like.

2. List the technical things you learned while in this process.

I didnt learn anything new, i used illustrator for this project and the tools i used, i've used many times before
