Project 39
Description
A web search for "children's stories" will bring a large number of results. Childrens stories are being posted on-line by many authors. From your search make a selection from these many stories and create an illustration. Imagine that this is a two or three page feature from an anthology of children's literature. Design the illustration and layout of it's text to invite the reader to reading it and help the emotional tone for the story. Choose the story for this project carefully. The interest and enthusiasm you have for the text will energize and motivate you in this project. Consider the length of the text. Will the story be best presented with the text all on one page? Will it be better to break it into several pages? If so, how will you make the visual continuity from page to page. Consider the typeface choice. Will this be read by the children themselves or be read by adults to the children? What type selection are best for either, or both, situations? Does your type selection support and compliment the text? Make a trip to the bookstore or library and choose three illustrated childrens book that you respect and admire. Make critiques of the artwork and layout and describe what ispires you and why. Present your findings to the class and conduct a brainstorming session. Create a thumbnail sketch of the overall layout of the story. Include in your layoth the composition of the illustration. Make sure the sketches relate enough information about the editorial and compositional choices. Make certain to go beyond what is being described in words. If the story says "Johnny and Mary held hands while walking under the moonlight", don't just draw that image unless you have special interpretation of the scene. The words have already delivered that information. Let your illustration convey something that enhances and adds to the depiction not merely an echo. Bring your ideas to a tight comp and bring it to class for review and discussion. After the class critique continue to a finished piece. Make a full color glossy print for the portfolio book and an image for your web site.
Mission Statement
For this project i choose to do a classic, which is Thumbalina by Hans Christian Anderson. I want to draw all my illustrations by hand and then fill them in with watercolor. The Layout will be made so that a parent can read it out loud to children, it may be confusing for smaller children to read or understand since it isnt a "kiddie" book. I want to have various pages with a picture on each page and the same style of illustrations will be featured on each page so there is visual continuity throughout the book.
