Project IV

Process Journal Questions
Describe your process of creating your first draft of your portrait.
1) desicrive the method you used to begin your creative process.
first i had to change my original picture to black and white and change the contrast so only what was important stood out so i could try to copy and overlap those lines with letters to get the same shape and look of my picture.
2)share your thoughs about your choice of letterform (i.e, "f", "H") and typeface (i.e. Helvetica, times).
I wanted a font that was cursive but not with so many elegant swirls at the ends of it. I ended up picking Lucida Calligraphy. It had a flowy feel to it with out being to cursive and to elegant. I thought the shapes of these letters could be attatched and combined easily to create my portrait.
3) How did you experiment and discover shape relationships?
I really was trying to just outline the important lines from the original picture of myself but as i was using the letters, some didnt fit as well as i thought they would. I had to just experiment with different letters and change there shape slightly so they would fit right but wouldnt loose there shape entirely. Turning them around and changing the size of them is what really helped to creat my portrait.
4) What do you believe to be the strenghts and weaknesses of each of your first draft?
A weakness i had was trying to overlap letters to create shading. The letters didnt look like letters when they were so overlapped with eachother and The shading didnt really compliment the picture either.
Describe your process of creating your final portrait.
1)what are your thoughts after the classroom critique?
After the classroom critique i still liked my portrait, i just felt that some things had to be adjusted. Some lines were too thick, some areas to dark, etc.
2) Was the consensus of your classmates in-line with your own perception of the work?
I think so, i didnt think my portrait came out too bad, and it wasnt critized much during the critque. I think my portrait looks like me, and they could see the resembalance also.
Lessons Learned
1) what have you learned in the creation of this design? was there anything that you learned about the way that you began this project or the methods you used while developing the design?
I learned that letter can be used in different ways other than just for type. I thought the project was going to be easier than it was, i thought i was just going to outline and highlight the more important features of my original photo to create this portrait but as i started i quickly learned its not that simple. Letters have slants, and serifs, and small things that got in the way and i had to figure out how to make the little small things work or use a different letter.
2) List the technical things you learned while in this process.
I learned how to use the trace tool on Adobe Illustrator, i've used it briefly before but i didnt really remember how to use it so it refreshed my mind. I also used the 'create outline' tool on the letters and i havent really used that much before either.
